Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Police say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then located many other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state preliminary tests suggest the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the event," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A high-ranking official commented the incident rendered him without words and had to be solved quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
