Trump Calls for Imprisonment of Chicago Mayor and State Executive as Military Forces Arrive in Metropolis

Ex-President Donald Trump on midweek demanded the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of not safeguarding ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump posted on his platform Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor as well!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic faction.

These remarks coincide with the arrival of state military personnel in the Chicago region following directives from the current government, despite strong objections from Illinois authorities such as the governor and mayor.

"This represents not the first instance where Trump attempted to have a Black man unjustly detained," Johnson responded on that day. "I am staying put."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, stating: "I will not yield. Now Trump is demanding arrests of elected officials checking his power. What's next on the road toward complete autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, military troops from the Lone Star State had arrived at the Elwood training facility, an army base roughly 80 kilometers from Chicago, as the administration pushes forward with its aggressive crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has called Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", even though official statistics indicate notable reductions in many offenses, including homicides.

On Wednesday, two hundred Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with another 300 Illinois guard forces readying for deployment, per sources. Authorities reportedly stated the soldiers would avoid law enforcement duties but would protect ICE officers and their facilities.

Military personnel in combat attire with Texas national guard patches were observed at the military facility in the town. Trucks marked "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered sanitation facilities and essential items. Trailers were set up in rows. Extra barriers was installed around the perimeter.

Aviation authorities imposed flight restrictions over the army reserve center for security reasons until 6 December.

The administration has escalated immigration enforcement in the city in recent weeks, sparking demonstrations, particularly near an immigration center in Broadview.

Earlier this week, state and city filed a lawsuit targeting the administration, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, urging a federal judge to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on the city and state, calling it "illegal and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is scheduled for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also issued an executive order on Monday prohibiting federal immigration agents and others from using city-owned property as operation bases for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has charged the president of using troops as "staged tools" and "pawns".

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Pritzker said that the president is trying to "justify and make acceptable the presence of military personnel under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old Posse Comitatus Act restricts the military's role in civilian law enforcement. Yet, the president has stated he would be willing to invoke the Insurrection Act, which allows a commander-in-chief to send active duty military in regions that are failing to put down an insurrection or are resisting federal law.

Since starting his new administration, Trump has dispatched or discussed deploying military units to over ten cities, such as major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, claiming that the armed forces is essential to combat crime and defend ICE officers.

Statistics indicates that most violent crime nationwide has declined in recent years. In the city, for instance, homicides were reduced nearly one-third to 278 through late summer, according to police data.

New survey data released on that day found that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the deployment of military forces without an external threat.
